Says Shirley Wright, Executive Director, "We thought we had the Gym aired out enough after the rain poured through the roof during Hurricane Ike....and we held the amazing San Jacinto High Rollers Toy Run there on December 7 (620 bikes with almost 1,000 riders!). However, in a staff meeting following the Toy Run, as we were planning Christmas parties, we heard that a few children had runny noses and other symptoms from whatever is in the air in the Gym. We want healthy children, so after 30 years of use, we have closed the Gym permanently." The closed Gym will be a real loss for our children who have depended on it for basketball, volleyball, video and pool competition, space for parties, music and dance lessons, weight lifting, and a general 'hanging out' place. "This building has been a daily center of activity for our children, and the Gym space will be sorely missed", says Wright. Boys and Girls Country is half way through an $8 million Capital Campaign to replace the worn out Gym -- to raise funds for a new Student Life Center and stop the flooding on the campus. Given our current situation with the closing of our Gym, the urgency of raising the $8 million is greater than ever. If you are interested in discussing how you can help replace the Gym by participating in the capital campaign, please contact Shirley Wright at 281.351.4976, ext. 214, or shirley.wright@boysandgirlscountry.org. |
