Boys and Girls Country Cancels Spring Festival

Torrential rains in the Hockley area have forced Boys and Girls Country to cancel their 33^rd annual Spring Festival scheduled for Saturday, May 2^nd.

The festival has been held each year on the Boys and Girls Country campus in northwest Harris County and attracts 2500-3000 children and adults of all ages. Over 500 volunteers had signed up to help this year.

The heavy rains drenched the areas where the booths, tents, and rides were to be placed, promising to make it a muddy mess for visitors on Saturday. Additionally, the possibility of parking over 2000 cars in an already soggy, muddy field was a safety concern for the guests expected to attend.

“We are extremely disappointed that our festival which is loved by so many must be canceled this year,” said Shirley Wright, Executive Director. “We will miss having the opportunity to meet and greet the thousands of friends who come for a fun day in the country. Spring Festival is also a major fund raising event for us. We must now replace $200,000 to provide for the daily needs of the children who live with us and grow up here.”

You can help by making a donation or shopping our Live Auction on line beginning Saturday morning. If you donated an item to our Silent Auction, it will be sold at our Heritage Dinner in the fall. And if you sold or purchased raffle tickets, be sure to get the stubs turned into our office by Monday, May 11 at noon for the drawing. Prizes are: Hotel and Airfare for 4 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida (some restrictions apply), a 32” LCD HDTV, and a Wii by Nintendo. Drawing tickets are $20 each or 6 for $100 and can be purchased by calling George O’Neal at 281-351-4976, ext. 225.
